Ten to fifteen percent of patients are affected by Type 1 diabetes, which is caused by the autoimmune destruction of insulin-producing \u03b2 cells. A large majority (&gt;80%) of patients have Type 2 diabetes. The risk of this form of diabetes increases with age, obesity, and family history. Monogenic forms of diabetes, caused by a mutation in a single gene, are less common (&lt;3%).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Pancreatic \u03b2-cell dysfunction is central to the development of nearly all types of diabetes. However, it remains poorly understood, and therapeutic decisions are still largely empirical.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) constitute a novel tool for studying diseases in a species-, cell-, and pathology-specific manner. This technology was established at the ULB Center for Diabetes Research with the aim of studying diabetes. To this end, skin fibroblasts or peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy individuals and diabetic patients are reprogrammed into iPSCs, thereby acquiring pluripotent properties. These iPSCs are then differentiated in vitro into pancreatic \u03b2 cells.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Over the past few years, we have established a fully equipped and operational iPSC laboratory. iPSCs derived from healthy individuals and diabetic patients are successfully differentiated in this facility. This revolutionary \u201cdisease-in-a-dish\u201d model is currently used to:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Investigate the pathogenic mechanisms of diabetes.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Discover novel biomarkers of \u03b2-cell dysfunction and death.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Develop clinical imaging tools for \u03b2 cells.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>\u00b7&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Test new therapeutic approaches.<\/p>\n<p>Human iPSCs are also transplanted into immunodeficient mice, providing an in vivo model used for the long-term administration of glucose-lowering drugs.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This highly specialized activity is currently expanding rapidly and requires a responsible, highly qualified individual with at least a Master\u2019s degree and expertise in the various methodologies used in these projects. More specifically, we are seeking a candidate who will be responsible for the following functions and tasks:<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>1) Responsibility for and oversight of all stem cell\u2013related activities (biobank management, maintenance of cell lines, quality control, cell stock management, preparation of culture media, molecules and culture substrates, differentiation into beta cells, development and testing of new protocols, etc.). This includes active participation in scientific experiments conducted within the framework of internal, national, and international collaborations, as well as providing technical support to researchers when needed.<\/p>\n<p>2) Primary contact person for the theoretical and practical training, mentoring, and supervision of researchers, interns, visitors, and research assistants in stem cell handling and related techniques. Responsible for scheduling laboratory coverage during weekends, holiday periods, and public holidays. Supervision and coordination of the work of lab assistants in the iPSC laboratory, in close collaboration with the Operations Manager.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1rem;\">3) Development of the stem cell activity through the implementation of new technologies within the laboratory and management of research project(s).
